State police bill set for passage this week, Senate Leader says

The long-debated push for state police may finally be reaching a major turning point. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele says the National Assembly is expected to pass the constitutional amendment bill for the creation of state police before the end of the week.

Speaking in an interview monitored by The PUNCH, Bamidele described the reform as long overdue, especially as Nigeria continues to grapple with insecurity across several regions. He said lawmakers have concluded consultations with key stakeholders and are now ready to move the proposal forward.

According to the Senate leader, the state police amendment will be separated from other constitutional review issues to speed up its passage. Once approved by the National Assembly, the bill will be transmitted to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for consideration.

Bamidele expressed confidence that both President Bola Tinubu and most state governors support the proposal, raising hopes that one of Nigeria’s most debated security reforms could soon become law.
