2027: Crisis looms as NDC strips Kwankwaso camp of tickets

A power struggle is rocking the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano as disputes over a 60–40 sharing formula between old members and Kwankwaso’s Kwankwasiyya bloc trigger fresh realignments of party tickets and accusations of marginalisation.

A leadership crisis has erupted within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State over a disputed sharing formula between long-standing members and recent entrants aligned with the Kwankwasiyya Movement led by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

According to Daily Trust, tensions began after attempts to balance influence between old party members and Kwankwaso’s supporters, with both sides initially agreeing to a 60–40 structure for executive positions and elective tickets.

The agreement reportedly saw Kwankwaso emerging as vice presidential candidate of the party in a past arrangement, while executive and elective positions were shared between the two blocs.

However, tensions resurfaced about 10 days after the party released its list of candidates, with old members alleging exclusion and breach of agreement.

A party document signed by Kano chairman Hussaini Isah Mairiga and addressed to senior party figures confirmed adjustments to several House of Representatives and state assembly nominations.

Among the approved House of Representatives candidates were Barr. Isma’il Idris Sani (Kumbotso), Nasiru Ali Ahmed (Nassarawa), Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id (Kano Municipal), and others across key constituencies.
