Nigeria considers sanctions against South Africa over xenophobia

Nigeria may be preparing a tougher response to the renewed wave of xenophobic attacks on its citizens in South Africa. The Federal Government says retaliatory measures, including a review of certain bilateral privileges, are now being considered as frustration grows over what it describes as Pretoria’s weak response to the attacks.

Speaking after meeting President Bola Tinubu, Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu accused South African authorities of failing to adequately protect Nigerians whose businesses have reportedly been looted, burnt and disrupted. She also rejected claims that the victims were illegal migrants.

According to a report by The Punch, the minister said any final decision would be taken at the highest level of government. She stressed that all options remain on the table as Nigeria seeks stronger protection for its citizens abroad.
