Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the growing practice of linking crime to entire ethnic groups, insisting that criminality has no tribal identity. According to Nigerian Tribune, Obi said criminals should be judged as individuals, not as representatives of their ethnic nationalities.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the former Anambra governor said he understands the pain of being stereotyped because of one’s background. He also expressed sympathy for ordinary Fulani people who are often blamed for crimes committed by a few bad actors.
“A thief is a thief. A terrorist is a terrorist. A kidnapper is a kidnapper,” Obi stated.
He warned that ethnic profiling breeds division and hatred, urging Nigerians to embrace unity, justice and mutual respect.
