IPOB challenges legal basis of Nnamdi Kanu’s conviction as FG cross-appeals

The legal battle involving Nnamdi Kanu has taken another dramatic turn, with the Indigenous People of Biafra claiming the Federal Government’s cross-appeal has weakened the foundation of his conviction.

According to a report by Punch Newspapers, IPOB argued that issues raised in the government’s appeal effectively question whether the trial court had the jurisdiction to convict its leader in the first place.

In a statement issued by spokesperson Emma Powerful, the group insisted that jurisdiction cannot be separated into stages, maintaining that any flaw at sentencing could affect the entire conviction.

IPOB also alleged procedural irregularities during the trial, including fair hearing concerns and the use of repealed laws. The group urged legal observers, diplomats and human rights organisations to closely monitor the proceedings as the high-profile case continues to attract national and international attention.
