The World Health Organisation has announced the first confirmed recovery from the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to Punch, the patient was discharged on May 27 after recording two negative tests, marking a major breakthrough since the outbreak was declared on May 15.
WHO official Anais Legand said 17 confirmed deaths and 223 suspected deaths have so far been recorded, with 125 confirmed cases and more than 900 suspected infections linked to the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola.
Although there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment for the strain, health officials say early medical care is improving survival chances. WHO added that more recoveries are expected as response efforts intensify across affected communities.
