A 30-year-old man, Pere Odese, was lynched by an angry mob in Edo State after he allegedly butchered his father, Friday Odese, following an altercation sparked by the family’s inability to source food due to local insecurity.
A horrific double tragedy has thrown the quiet community of Ikhehe in Ewato, located within the Esan Southeast Local Government Area of Edo State, into deep mourning following a domestic dispute that escalated into murder and jungle justice. A 30-year-old man, identified as Pere Odese, was violently lynched by an angry mob on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, while attempting to flee the village after he hacked his aged father, Friday Odese, to death. Local sources revealed that the fatal confrontation was triggered by extreme food scarcity and economic frustration directly tied to the severe regional insecurity that has heavily paralyzed farming activities across the agrarian locality.
Eyewitnesses in the neighborhood disclosed that a bitter altercation erupted when the younger Odese demanded food from his father, who was a well-known local subsistence farmer. The deceased father reportedly explained to his son that there was no food anywhere in the house, adding that he had been completely blocked from accessing his family farm to harvest cassava due to the heavy presence of heavily armed unknown gunmen who have taken over the deep forest tracks in the area. Frustrated by the response, the situation rapidly turned violent, culminating in Pere picking up a sharp farm cutlass and repeatedly striking his father until he succumbed to catastrophic injuries.
The bloodbath extended beyond the immediate family when a brave neighbor rushed into the compound to rescue the elderly farmer from the assault. The intermediary was met with severe aggression from the suspect, receiving multiple critical machete wounds across his body before he could escape, and he is currently fighting for his life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of an undisclosed regional hospital. Outraged by the unprovoked brutality, local youths quickly mobilized, cornering the suspect as he made a desperate break for the village borders and lynching him on the spot. Reacting to the development, the Spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, stated that while official reports have not been formally lodged at the divisional headquarters, a tactical homicide team has been dispatched to investigate the grim sequence of events.
