INEC warned insecurity could threaten the 2027 elections, while opposition parties opposed any military deployment for poll security.
Fresh concerns over the credibility of Nigeria’s 2027 elections emerged after INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan warned that worsening insecurity could threaten free and fair polls. Speaking during a visit to the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, he stressed the need for proactive security planning ahead of the January and February 2027 elections.
Amupitan said, “The scale of insecurity across the various parts of Nigeria presents a threat to the conduct of the fair election.” He also urged protection for displaced persons and voters with disabilities.
Opposition parties, however, rejected any suggestion of deploying soldiers to polling units. Critics including the Labour Party and PDP argued elections are civic exercises best managed by police and civil agencies, warning military involvement could heighten tension and undermine public confidence.
