Tensions flared in the Senate as Akpabio threatened to “take out” Oshiomhole during heated debate over a controversial rules amendment.
Tension erupted at the Nigerian Senate on Wednesday as Senate President Godswill Akpabio clashed with former Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole, during plenary in Abuja. The confrontation followed repeated interruptions by Oshiomhole as lawmakers considered the Votes and Proceedings, amid controversy over a proposed amendment to Senate rules on eligibility for presiding and principal officer positions.
The Senate had been reviewing the previous day’s proceedings when Oshiomhole, who may be affected by the rule change, repeatedly raised “point of order” to halt deliberations. As tensions escalated, Akpabio directed Orji Uzor Kalu to counsel him, while the Chief Whip, Mohammed Monguno, warned of possible sanctions. Addressing him on the floor, Akpabio said, “If you are a soldier, you behave like a soldier. If you are a police officer, you behave like a police officer. So if you are a senator, you must go by the rules.”
Despite being ruled out of order, Oshiomhole continued to speak from his seat, prompting further warnings. Monguno said, “Senator Oshiomhole, be guided, otherwise I will invoke the powers of the office of the Chief Whip against you.” Akpabio then escalated the warning, stating, “If you become unruly, I will take you out of the Senate.”
