Atiku heads to US to highlight Nigeria’s ‘full-blown internal crisis’

Atiku Abubakar is visiting the United States to seek international support in addressing Nigeria’s systemic insecurity and economic failure.

ABUJA — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is set to travel to the United States to draw international attention to what he describes as Nigeria’s “full‑blown internal crisis,” citing rising insecurity and severe economic distress.

Through his media adviser, Atiku warned that “the Nigerian state is steadily losing its grip on its most fundamental responsibility: the protection of lives and property.” He also criticized the administration’s policy inconsistencies, noting that “rising inflation, a weakened currency, and collapsing purchasing power have pushed millions into distress.”

Rejecting claims that his international engagement is unpatriotic, he asserted: “Telling the truth about Nigeria is not unpatriotic.”

Now a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku has launched a $1.2 million lobbying effort in Washington as part of his push for accountability ahead of the 2027 elections. He insisted that “any government that cannot guarantee basic security forfeits the moral basis of its mandate.”
