Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s vow to seek re-election despite rising insecurity, arguing that governance should be defined by the protection of lives rather than political defiance
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticized President Bola Tinubu for his recent remarks asserting that escalating insecurity would not deter his bid for a second term. Speaking on Wednesday, President Tinubu maintained his resolve to seek re-election regardless of the prevailing security challenges, labeling those using the crisis to oppose him as “agents” of his enemies. “You are playing into the hands of agents, including my own enemies, who want to use insecurity to get rid of me,” Tinubu said. “I’m a very stubborn politician. I just refuse to go. And I will campaign for my second term.
In a swift rebuttal issued through his senior special assistant on public communication, Phrank Shaibu, Abubakar described the President’s stance as “troubling,” arguing that leadership should be measured by accountability rather than personal ambition. The former Vice-President contended that the current administration has failed in its fundamental constitutional duty to protect Nigerian citizens. Abubakar emphasized that the gravity of the situation transcends partisan politics, stating, “It is not political opponents who will judge this administration; it is the blood of innocent Nigerians being shed daily across our land. That blood cries out louder than any declaration of political resolve.”
Abubakar further highlighted the human cost of the ongoing violence, citing data that suggests a staggering increase in fatalities since the current administration took office. He noted that over 10,000 people have been killed under Tinubu’s watch, with some estimates reaching as high as 18,000 deaths within two years due to persistent nationwide violence. By prioritizing his re-election campaign over a concrete security strategy, Abubakar argued that the President is ignoring a catastrophic humanitarian crisis in favor of political survival.
