A Delta State police officer has been arrested and transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja after fatally shooting a 28-year-old suspect during an arms-related operation in Effurun.
A Nigerian police officer is facing disciplinary proceedings and possible prosecution after fatally shooting a suspect during an operation in Effurun, Delta State, on April 26.
The suspect, Mene Ogidi, was targeted after intelligence indicated he was attempting to transport a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition. However, the officer leading the operation, ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly fired his weapon in violation of established procedures, killing Ogidi on the spot.
Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi ordered the officer’s immediate arrest. He has since been transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja.
“The Command maintains zero tolerance for unprofessional conduct and will ensure that justice is served,” the official statement read.
The police also extended condolences to Ogidi’s family.
