A South African court has ordered the immediate deportation of Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, 28, youngest son of Zimbabwe’s late former president Robert Mugabe, following a shooting incident at his upscale Hyde Park home in Johannesburg.
Mugabe admitted to being in South Africa illegally and was fined 600,000 rand ($36,000) on two counts. His cousin and co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze, 32, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and received concurrent prison terms of up to three years.
Magistrate Reiner Boshoff addressed Mugabe directly: “Mr Mugabe, you can count yourself very lucky that the complainant in your case was not injured.”
Police were ordered to escort Mugabe immediately to OR Tambo International Airport. The gardener at the centre of the case was paid 250,000 rand ($15,000) in compensation.
