UK to raise visa fees across work, study by £222

The United Kingdom is set to implement a widespread increase in visa fees starting April 8, 2026, alongside a new “emergency brake” on student visas for four specific nations and a pilot program offering failed asylum seekers up to £10,000 to voluntarily depart.

The United Kingdom Home Office has announced a significant increase in immigration and nationality fees, scheduled to take effect on April 8, 2026. Under the new schedule, application charges for most visa categories—including work, study, and visitation—will rise by approximately 6% to 7%, with some settlement applications seeing increases of up to £222. Specifically, the standard six-month visitor visa will rise to £135, while student visas will increase to £558. The most substantial hike affects Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) applications, which are set to reach £3,226 per applicant. Home Office officials stated the increases are necessary to “reflect the cost of processing applications and ensure the immigration system remains sustainable” while reducing the burden on the British taxpayer.

In addition to the fee hikes, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has introduced an unprecedented “emergency brake” on student visas for nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan. This measure, which became operational in late March, follows data showing that asylum applications from students of these four countries had surged to over 470% of their 2021 levels. The Home Secretary defended the move as a vital step to restore integrity to the borders, stating, “Britain will always provide refuge to people fleeing war and persecution, but our visa system must not be abused.” The government also confirmed that Skilled Worker visas for Afghan nationals would be suspended, as the number of those claiming asylum after arriving on work visas reportedly began to outpace the number of visas issued.

As part of a broader “fair but firm” reform package, the government is launching a pilot program to encourage failed asylum seekers to return to their home countries. Under the scheme, individuals who have exhausted their legal appeals will be offered an incentive payment of £10,000 to leave voluntarily, with families eligible for up to £40,000. For those who refuse the offer, the Home Office warned of a transition to “enforced removal” within seven days. Furthermore, the government has moved to withdraw taxpayer-funded accommodation from migrants found working illegally, while also halving the period of humanitarian protection for refugees to 30 months to reduce “pull factors” for irregular migration.
