NNPP founder Dr. Boniface Aniebonam has celebrated the exit of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso to the ADC, labeling it a “relief” for the party while permanently barring the former presidential candidate from returning to the fold.
The founder of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, has formally distanced the party from Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s departure to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring that the party will not serve as a “fallback” for the former presidential candidate. Following Kwankwaso’s Sunday announcement that he is resigning from the NNPP to pursue a “strategic realignment” with the ADC effective March 30, Aniebonam clarified that the move is restricted to the Kwankwasiya movement. “We are not joining ADC, most of our members in Kano State went to the APC,” Aniebonam stated, adding that the party is “actually relieved to see Kwankwaso join a new party as that will usher in the peace that had long eluded members.”
The leadership transition has been marked by sharp internal friction and conflicting directives. While Dr. Ahmed Ajuji, a member of the Kwankwasiya movement, issued a memo urging party officials to remain in their positions amid moves to “unify the party,” Aniebonam dismissed the instruction, asserting that Ajuji and Kwankwaso had already been expelled following successful court litigation. Aniebonam further alleged that the party’s sole governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, had already moved toward the APC due to these “escalating court cases,” rendering the Kwankwasiya leadership’s claims of authority “funny” and illegitimate.
Looking toward the 2027 general elections, the NNPP founder vowed that the party would not repeat its “mistake” of handing over its presidential ticket for free. He revealed that consultations with new aspirants have already begun, emphasizing that future candidates must undergo rigorous primaries. Addressing the finality of the split, Aniebonam insisted, “The NNPP will not accept Kwankwaso back into its fold nor allow him to ever fly our flag again for whatever position,” signaling a definitive end to the alliance that defined the party’s 2023 campaign.
