Authorities in western Mexico have uncovered more than 500 bags containing human remains in clandestine graves around Guadalajara, capital of Jalisco. The discoveries, made at over 22 grave sites since last year, include a major find at a property known as Las Agujas in Zapopan, where construction workers first uncovered remains in 2025.
The sites are located a few miles from Estadio Akron, one of the venues set to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, raising safety concerns among residents. Mexican authorities say the violence is linked to cartel conflicts following the reported killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, though officials insist security measures will protect tournament visitors.
