Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has dismissed President Bola Tinubu’s chances in the 2027 presidential race, asserting that his reliance on state governors is a futile attempt to project an “illusion of power” while losing the support of the electorate.
Frontline human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has declared that President Bola Tinubu has already lost his bid for the 2027 presidential election, despite his current efforts to consolidate political influence. Featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, March 5, 2026, Yesufu argued that the President is leaning on state governors to mask a lack of genuine public support. She dismissed the tactical advantage of having a majority of governors, noting that such a strategy has failed incumbent parties in the past. “Bola Tinubu has already lost; that’s why he is looking for governors that he’d put together to have an illusion of power,” she stated.
Drawing a historical parallel, Yesufu reminded viewers that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) once controlled the majority of the states but was still ousted when the electorate demanded change. “Once upon a time, I think PDP had 20-something governors; it didn’t stop them from losing the election when it was time for them to lose,” she remarked. She contended that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has struggled to connect with Nigerians, citing a lack of public enthusiasm during recent party registration exercises as a primary indicator of its waning influence.
In contrast, Yesufu highlighted the rising momentum of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party she recently joined in support of a potential Atiku-Obi alliance. She claimed that while the public has remained indifferent to the APC’s digital outreach, the ADC has seen a surge in engagement and grassroots passion. “The fact that they don’t have the people, you could see it when they were doing the registration and nobody was interested, nobody cared to visit their website. But you can see with the ADC the kind of passion it has gathered,” Yesufu added, suggesting that the political landscape is shifting away from the incumbent administration.
