A Lagos Coroner’s Court has scheduled April 14, 2026, to commence an inquest into the death of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s son following allegations of medical negligence.
A Coroner’s Court sitting at the Yaba Magistrate Court in Lagos has fixed April 14, 2026, to begin an inquest into the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, son of Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr Ivara Esege. Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji adjourned proceedings after confirming that the inquiry followed an application by the Chief Coroner of Lagos State at the request of the Attorney-General.
The child died on January 7, 2026, after receiving treatment at Atlantis Hospital and undergoing diagnostic procedures at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, where his parents allege medical negligence and professional misconduct. The court directed all parties to file witness statements ahead of the hearing, stating that the inquest will determine the cause of death, with Euracare to open its case, followed by the family and Atlantis Hospital.
