Bauchi Police rescue man held in chains by father for 17 years

A middle-aged man has been rescued by the Bauchi State Police after allegedly being confined and chained by his father for 17 years in Shadawanka village.

The Bauchi State Police Command rescued a man identified as Muhammad Lawan, popularly known as Babangida, on Sunday, February 16, 2026, after he was reportedly held captive by his biological father in Shadawanka village, Bauchi Local Government Area. According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, the rescue followed a tip-off from a good Samaritan who alerted authorities to the victim’s condition. A police team, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of ‘B’ Division, accompanied by the spokesperson, visited the residence and found the victim in an emaciated state.

The suspect, identified as Mohammed Lawan, the victim’s father, has been arrested and is currently in police custody. The rescued man was immediately taken to a hospital for medical treatment and rehabilitation. The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed the DPO to carry out a preliminary investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the prolonged confinement.

Authorities have described the case as shocking, emphasizing the importance of community vigilance in reporting suspected abuse. “The victim was found in an emaciated state and immediately rescued,” SP Habib said, highlighting the role of local residents in bringing the case to light.
