El-Rufai faces two-year jail over cybercrime charges

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai is facing a three-count cybercrime charge filed by the DSS and further EFCC questioning over alleged financial impropriety.

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai faces up to two years in jail if convicted on alleged cybercrime offences, following a three-count charge filed by the Directorate of State Services (DSS). The charge, bordering on intrusion into privacy, was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja and centres on the alleged unlawful interception of telephone communications involving the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

The charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/99/2026, was filed early yesterday and is linked to comments El-Rufai made during a February 13, 2026, interview on Arise TV’s Prime Time programme. In that interview, he spoke of listening to intercepted conversations allegedly involving Ribadu and security operatives, statements investigators now say amount to admissions of criminal conduct.

Separately, El-Rufai was detained last night after hours of questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged financial impropriety. His appearance at the EFCC office attracted both supporters and critics who staged protests outside the premises, as the former governor faces multiple investigations and mounting legal challenges.
