Nigeria remains in suspense as FIFA delays its decision on the NFF’s petition challenging DR Congo’s eligibility in the 2026 World Cup play-offs.
World football governing body FIFA has yet to rule on a petition by the Nigeria Football Federation alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during last November’s 2026 World Cup African play-offs. NFF President Ibrahim Gusau said, “We are still waiting to hear from FIFA. We are hopeful, by the grace of God,” as intercontinental play-offs approach.
The NFF’s protest centres on alleged improper nationality switches by DR Congo players. “We believe that we have a chance; that is why we petitioned… it is now left to FIFA to decide,” General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi said. Midfielder Alex Iwobi added, “We’re still waiting — hopefully we can go to the World Cup,” while officials hinted the case could reach the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
