Senator proposes single 16-year presidential tenure for Nigeria

Senator Kenneth Eze has proposed a nationwide debate on adopting a single 16-year presidential tenure to replace Nigeria’s current two-term system.

Senator Kenneth Eze (APC-Ebonyi) has called for a national debate on replacing Nigeria’s current two-term, four-year presidential cycle with a single 16-year tenure, arguing that frequent elections disrupt governance and stall development. Speaking in Ezza South LGA, Mr Eze said, “Every four years, we return to campaign mode,” adding, “if you ask me, I will advocate one tenure of 16 years,” insisting the proposal is a governance reform conversation requiring constitutional amendment through the National Assembly and state legislatures.
