The Confederation of African Football has announced plans to expand the Africa Cup of Nations to 28 teams and hold the tournament every four years.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled plans to expand the Africa Cup of Nations to 28 participating countries. CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the proposal is designed to boost competitiveness and provide more nations with the opportunity to shine on the continental stage.
Currently, 24 countries qualify for Africa’s premier football tournament. Under the proposed changes, the expanded competition would also be staged every four years instead of the existing two-year cycle.
Motsepe said the new format would allow more nations to compete at the highest level, showcase their talent, and contribute to the growth of African football. He added that the four-year cycle would enable countries to prepare more adequately, strengthen their squads, and build greater competitive consistency.
