The Senate’s last-minute removal of mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results has sparked national backlash, forcing an emergency session and prompting threats of mass action by the NLC.
Fresh details have emerged on how the Senate rejected a proposal mandating real-time electronic transmission of election results ahead of the 2027 polls. Sources said three ranking Southern senators allegedly intervened during clause-by-clause consideration of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, leading to the last-minute removal of Clause 60(3), which sought to compel INEC to upload polling unit results to IReV in real time.
Following widespread criticism, the Senate has scheduled an emergency plenary for February 10. Civil society groups and the Nigeria Labour Congress condemned the move, with the NLC warning: “Failure to add electronic transmission real-time will lead to mass action before, during and after the election or total boycott of the election.” The NBA, however, said the delay may not derail the 2027 polls.
