Lagos Police allegedly demand ₦350,000 to help recover fraud victim’s ₦429,000

A Lagos resident was forced to drop an internet fraud case after Zone 2 police officers allegedly demanded N350,000 to investigate the theft of her N429,000.

Officers at the Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos are reportedly demanding N350,000 from a fraud victim to investigate the theft of N429,000. The victim, Funmilola Onabanjo, sought help after being scammed by a fraudulent Instagram vendor in January. Upon approaching the command with evidence, she was allegedly told that filing the petition alone would cost N50,000.

“They said that if I truly want to pursue the case, I would spend about N350,000 in total,” Onabanjo told FIJ. “I just gave up because I don’t have any money to waste.” Despite providing the suspect’s bank details and BVN information, the exorbitant demand has forced her to abandon the case, leaving the cybercriminal at large to target more victims.
