Armed herdsmen attack Benue market, abduct women, set stalls ablaze

Suspected armed herdsmen attacked a Benue community market, abducted women traders and burned stalls before fleeing the area.

Suspected armed herdsmen on Friday attacked Anwase Market in Mbaikyor, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, kidnapping several women and setting parts of the market on fire. Witnesses said the attackers emerged from a nearby mountain, firing sporadically to scare residents before torching stalls.

An eyewitness said the market was already engulfed in flames before residents could respond, forcing traders to flee. The assailants reportedly escaped with the victims toward the mountainous area before security agencies arrived. Efforts to reach the Benue State police spokesperson for comment were unsuccessful.
