The Lagos Assembly has suspended the Makoko demolition exercise and pledged compensation for residents whose properties were affected.
The Lagos State House of Assembly has ordered an immediate halt to demolitions in Makoko and adjoining waterfront communities in Yaba Local Government Area, pledging compensation for affected residents. The decision followed a meeting on Tuesday between lawmakers and community representatives at the Assembly Complex in Alausa, Ikeja, after petitions over the December 2025 exercise.
Announcing the resolutions, ad hoc committee chairman, Noheem Adams, said all agencies involved must suspend further action, adding that victims would be compensated. “All demolitions in Makoko and its waterfront communities should stop with immediate effect,” he said. Responding, community leader Isaac Gunmayon thanked the Assembly, saying, “The resolutions reached by the House reflect our wishes.”
