Nigerian reportedly killed fighting for Russian forces in Ukraine War

A Nigerian national has been reported killed while fighting for Russian forces in the ongoing war against Ukraine, according to journalists and security analysts.

Reports have emerged that a Nigerian national was killed on the battlefield while fighting for Russian forces against Ukraine. The development was confirmed on Monday by journalist Jaafar Jaafar and security analyst Zagazola Makama, who described the incident as a tragic outcome of the protracted conflict.

Makama, in a post on social media, said the deceased had left his family in Northern Nigeria to enlist with the Russian army. “Sad. He left his family in Northern Nigeria to join Russia’s army to fight Ukraine. He was unfortunately killed in the battlefield,” Makama wrote, without disclosing further details about the circumstances of his death.

The Russia–Ukraine war, now in its fourth year since Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, has resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions. Amid mounting casualties, Russia has faced manpower shortages and has increasingly relied on foreign recruits, private military contractors and allied militias to sustain its military campaign.
