South Africa to host 2026 WAFCON after Morocco pulls out

South Africa will host the 2026 WAFCON after Morocco’s surprise withdrawal, with the tournament retaining its role as a qualifier for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

South Africa has been named host of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations following Morocco’s reported withdrawal 60 days to kickoff. The tournament is scheduled for March 17 to April 3, 2026, under a compressed calendar after delays to the 2024 edition caused by global scheduling challenges.

Announcing the decision in Johannesburg, Deputy Minister of Sport Peace Mabe said, “Tonight, I would like to announce that South Africa will be hosting the 2026 WAFCON.” The expanded 16-team tournament also serves as qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with dates yet to be confirmed after the host switch.
