17 Ogoni communities protest resumed oil exploration, demand FG intervention

Protesters from 17 Ogoni communities have called on the Federal Government to stop renewed oil exploration, warning of possible unrest over unresolved environmental and humanitarian concerns.

Hundreds of protesters from 17 Ogoni communities in Tai Local Government Area staged a peaceful demonstration in Bori, Khana LGA, over the resumption of oil exploration. The protesters urged President Bola Tinubu to order an immediate halt, citing lack of consultation, unresolved environmental damage, and threats to community safety.

Speaking for the protesters, Dr Douglas Fabeke said, “We urge the Federal Government to take immediate actions to halt oil resumption in these communities.” He warned that failure to address long-standing grievances could trigger unrest, stressing that Sahara Energy had been rejected and declared “persona non grata” by the communities.
