Onitsha Main Market will reopen after Soludo and traders agreed to end Monday sit-at-home amid heavy economic losses and renewed security assurances.
Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo has reached an agreement with Onitsha Main Market leaders to end the Monday sit-at-home, paving the way for the market’s reopening. Traders agreed to resume Monday operations but cited logistics and security concerns requiring urgent government intervention.
Soludo pledged to overhaul market security, declaring, “Igbo land and Anambra will move forward.” He warned that defiance would attract “extreme measures,” adding that sit-at-home enforcement had become “a criminal enterprise.” Traders estimate losses of over N200 billion during the six-day closure.
