2027: Obi ticket uncertainty delays Kwankwaso’s ADC defection

Kwankwaso is delaying his defection to the ADC pending assurances that Peter Obi will secure the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.

The National Leader of the NNPP, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is delaying his defection to the African Democratic Congress over uncertainty that former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, will secure the party’s 2027 presidential ticket, Sunday PUNCH has gathered. Sources within the Kwankwasiyya Movement and the ADC said the move hinges on a proposed Obi–Kwankwaso alliance brokered by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

An ADC official confirmed meetings between both sides but said unresolved issues stalled a decision. A Kwankwaso loyalist said northern leaders and Obasanjo advised caution, warning that Obi might lose the ADC primary. “As it stands, Kwankwaso is Obi’s only strong bargaining chip,” the source said, adding that consultations were ongoing.
