Nipah Virus Outbreak in India: What you need to know

Two Nipah virus cases in West Bengal have triggered regional screening, though WHO considers the risk of further spread low.

India has confirmed two cases of the deadly Nipah virus in West Bengal, with both patients being healthcare workers receiving hospital treatment. The health ministry identified 196 contacts, who were tested and placed under observation, and none have shown symptoms or tested positive. “The situation is under constant monitoring and all necessary public health measures are in place,” the ministry said. Neighboring countries have heightened airport and border screening as a precaution.

Nipah virus is a zoonotic virus transmitted from animals like bats or pigs, and can also spread between humans through close contact. Classified as a biosafety level four pathogen, it has a case fatality rate of up to 75 percent. There is no approved vaccine or treatment, but early diagnosis and supportive care are critical. The WHO said the risk of spread from India is low and did not recommend travel restrictions.
