Alleged coup: 16 officers to face special military court-martial — DHQ

The Defence Headquarters has announced that 16 officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces, earlier indicted over alleged acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations, will be tried by a special military court-martial following the conclusion of investigations by a Special Investigative Panel. The Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, recalling that the officers were arrested in October 2025 and that the probe was conducted in line with established military procedures and extant regulations.

Major Gen Uba said the investigation reviewed the circumstances surrounding the officers’ conduct and identified personnel with cases to answer, including allegations bordering on plotting to overthrow the government, describing such actions as inconsistent with the ethics and professional standards of the Armed Forces. He stressed that the steps taken were “purely disciplinary and part of internal institutional mechanisms to preserve discipline, cohesion and operational effectiveness within the ranks,” while reaffirming “the commitment of the Armed Forces to professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority,” and assuring that due process and fairness would be strictly observed throughout the proceedings.
