Tragedy in Mexico: Gunmen kill 11 during football match

At least 11 people were killed and 12 others wounded on Sunday when gunmen opened fire during a football game in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato.

According to local authorities and reports from El Sol de Salamanca, the attackers arrived in two vehicles and unleashed a hail of bullets on those present, leaving behind at least 100 shell casings at the scene.

While the motive for the massacre remains unknown, the region continues to grapple with extreme violence, having recorded Mexico’s highest homicide rate in 2025.

Local police have launched an investigation into the assault, confirming that “people were playing football when the gunmen arrived in two vehicles and opened fire on those present.”
