Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical director, Austin Eguavoen, has questioned Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle over his squad selection for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, expressing disappointment that no players from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) were included in the final 28-man list, which is largely dominated by foreign-based stars such as Calvin Bassey, Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams, with Eguavoen arguing that the exclusion of local talents was unnecessary, especially as some invited players may not feature during the tournament, saying, “I felt disappointed that we didn’t include some NPFL players in the AFCON squad,” and adding, “Some players in the team may not even get a minute of action, so why couldn’t we include a few players from the local league? At least three or four would’ve been better,” in comments he made to Footy Africa while reacting to Chelle’s selection choices ahead of the continental showpiece.
