What began as online debates over musical legacy has escalated into a public feud involving Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti, fans of Wizkid, and the Grammy-winning artiste himself. The disagreement surfaced in early January after Seun shared a lengthy video on Instagram criticising Wizkid’s fanbase, popularly known as Wizkid FC, for repeatedly invoking the name of his late father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, in music-related discussions.
In the video, Seun warned fans to stop comparing contemporary artistes to Fela, describing such claims as a misunderstanding of his father’s influence and historical significance. He argued that branding any modern musician as the “new Fela” diminished the depth of Fela’s legacy, accusing fans of attempting to appropriate his father’s name for online debates before abandoning the comparison when it proved unsustainable.
