Shock on campus as varsity student dies after losing ₦600,000 to betting

A 300-level Computer Science student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), Niger State, identified as Kelvin Danlami, has reportedly died by suicide following the loss of ₦600,000 to sports betting. Sources said the money was entrusted to the student for house rent but was allegedly diverted to gambling activities.

The incident came to light after Danlami’s body was discovered in his room by a neighbour, who raised an alarm and alerted the authorities. A fellow student confirmed the development, stating that the deceased allegedly took his life after mismanaging funds entrusted to him due to gambling-related issues.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the police received a report on January 19, 2026, that the student was found unresponsive in his room. He said the victim was taken to the General Hospital in Lapai, where he was confirmed dead, adding that police operatives visited the scene, contacted the family, and commenced an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
