Rivers court halts impeachment proceedings against Fubara

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo Local Government Area, Port Harcourt, on Friday issued an interim injunction restraining the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, the Clerk of the House and others from sending any correspondence to the Chief Judge of the state in connection with the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy. The court also barred the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, from receiving, forwarding, considering or acting on any request, resolution or articles of impeachment aimed at constituting a panel to investigate the alleged misconduct against the governor and his deputy for a period of seven days.

The presiding judge, Justice F.A. Fiberesima, granted the orders while ruling on a motion ex parte in two separate suits filed by Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu, and directed that the interim orders and originating processes be served on the defendants, including at the gate of the Rivers State Assembly quarters and through staff of the Chief Judge’s chambers. The court adjourned the matter to January 23, 2026, for hearing of the motion, even as the Rivers State House of Assembly resolved on Friday to continue with the impeachment proceedings, with four lawmakers who had earlier withdrawn from the move reportedly recanting their position and accusing the governor of being adamant.
