Nigeria’s Super Eagles bowed out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday after losing 4-2 on penalties to host nation Morocco in a tense semi-final clash at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, with players openly criticizing the match officiating.
Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel described the performance of Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea as “appalling,” saying it fell below the standard expected of a high-profile tournament encounter. “One thing I would say is that the refereeing was appalling,” Osayi-Samuel said.
“I am not saying that is the reason why we lost, but he was just making very wrong decisions, and it is really painful that we have a referee like that in a big game like today. I wish Morocco all the best.”
Despite the disappointment of the shootout defeat, Osayi-Samuel said the team delivered a strong performance across 120 minutes and deserved credit for their effort.
“It is painful, very painful to lose. I think we played very well. The back four was amazing. I am proud of the team. The manager and the board members came down to say they are proud of the team. It is just really painful that we lost on penalties,” he stated.
Forward Akor Adams also vented his frustration with the officiating, bluntly telling journalists in the mixed zone, “Make una go interview referee,” when approached for comments after the match. Nigeria will now take on Egypt in the third-place match scheduled for Saturday in Casablanca.
