Scissors left in patient’s body: Kano govt suspends three hospital staff

The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three health personnel over the death of a woman, Aishatu Umar, who reportedly died after undergoing surgery at the government-owned Abubakar Imam Urology Center in Kano, where scissors allegedly used during the procedure were forgotten inside her body.

Officials confirmed that a preliminary investigation established that the incident occurred at the facility, sparking widespread public outrage and renewed concerns over patient safety in public hospitals.

In a statement issued by the board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, the Executive Secretary, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, said the affected personnel had been suspended with immediate effect and referred to the Kano State Medical Ethical Committee for further investigation and disciplinary action.

“Following a preliminary and transparent investigation ordered by the Executive Secretary, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, the Board has established that the unfortunate incident involving the late Aishatu Umar did occur at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center,” the statement said, adding that “the Board has outrightly suspended three (3) personnel directly involved in the case from clinical activities with immediate effect” and would not condone negligence in any form.
