Panic in Sokoto as Bello Turji threatens villages, residents flee en masse

Residents of communities in eastern Sokoto State, particularly Tidibale in Isa Local Government Area, have begun fleeing their homes following fresh threats allegedly issued by notorious bandits’ kingpin, Bello Turji. The warning, which came after months of relative silence, has sparked panic among villagers, forcing families to abandon their homes and farmlands amid fears of renewed attacks. Vanguard gathered that many of the displaced residents have sought refuge in Isa, Gidan Hamisu and neighbouring Shinkafi in Zamfara State.

The latest development comes against the backdrop of heightened insecurity in the region, as at least five people, including a former councillor and 2019 Peoples Democratic Party House of Assembly candidate for Otukpo-Akpa constituency, Mr Igbabe Ochi, were reportedly killed during a midnight attack on Otobi Akpa community in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State. Meanwhile, efforts to curb terrorism, banditry and kidnapping continue, with the United States government recently delivering critical military supplies to Nigeria to strengthen security operations.

Local accounts suggest that Turji’s renewed threats are aimed at reasserting his influence, particularly over communities that have not entered into any form of truce with him. Women, children and the elderly are among those displaced, with farmers abandoning preparations for the planting season to seek safety in overcrowded homes and makeshift shelters. A public commentator on insecurity in Sokoto East, Altine Guyawa, said the threats have reshaped the security landscape, noting that Turji’s activities are now concentrated in Isa, Sabon Birni, Goronyo, Wurno and Rabah local government areas that have resisted entering into agreements with the bandit leader.
