The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened an investigation into alleged misconduct involving players, officials and members of the media during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-final matches between Nigeria and Algeria, as well as Cameroon and Morocco.
In a statement released on its official website on Monday, CAF said it had reviewed match officials’ reports and video footage indicating potentially unacceptable behaviour, including confrontations with referees and disturbances in post-match areas, and had referred the cases to its Disciplinary Board.
“CAF has referred the matters to the Disciplinary Board for investigation and has called for appropriate action to be taken if the identified persons are found guilty of any wrongdoing,” the statement said, adding that it was also reviewing footage of “an incident involving members of the media who allegedly misbehaved in the mixed zone area.”
The probe follows tense scenes at the weekend’s quarter-final fixtures, including Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Algeria in Marrakech, where goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams sent the Super Eagles into the semi-finals before the match ended in chaos, with Algerian players confronting match officials and fans attempting a pitch invasion that was stopped by security.
The Algerian Football Federation has since filed a formal complaint, citing disputed decisions by referee Issa Sy, while Cameroon also raised concerns over officiating in its 2-0 defeat to Morocco, claiming two penalties were wrongly denied.
CAF said it remained committed to upholding discipline at the tournament, stressing that “CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers,” and that “appropriate actions will be sought against anyone whose behaviour is not consistent with professional conduct at CAF events.”
