Some Nigerians have criticised a new US visa bond policy requiring applicants to pay up to $15,000, warning it could deter legitimate tourists and business travelers. The policy, which affects 25 countries including Nigeria, applies to B1/B2 visas and does not guarantee approval, the US Department of State said. Applicants must submit Form I-352 and pay only after consular instruction, with the bond refundable upon compliance.
Several Nigerians described the policy as unfair and excessive. “It’s like they are pricing us out of the opportunity to even try,” one traveler said, while another called the bond “heartbreaking.” Analysts say the move aligns with stricter US immigration controls, though some Nigerians support it, arguing visa abuse prompted the policy. US authorities say the bond targets overstay risks and ensures compliance with immigration laws.
