Afrobeat singer and activist, Seun Kuti, has berated fans of popular artiste Wizkid, popularly known as Wizkid FC, over what he described as repeated and disrespectful attempts to drag the name of his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, into online music debates. In a video shared on his Instagram page on Saturday, Seun warned the fan base to desist from invoking Fela’s legacy in contemporary arguments, describing such actions as ignorant and provocative. “Keep Fela’s name out of your (Wizkid FC) mouths. Why must you find a way to bring Fela always into your discussions?” he said, adding that attempts to portray any modern artiste as a “new Fela” showed a poor understanding of his father’s historical and cultural impact.
The musician also blamed toxic fan culture for fuelling unnecessary rivalry within the industry, urging fans to focus on enjoying music rather than stoking conflict. “You try to steal the man. You try to claim that this your artiste is the new Fela… If your lack of respect came from a place of defiance, I would respect it. But your lack of respect comes from a place of ignorance. Complete ignorance,” he said. Seun maintained that impactful art should inspire reflection rather than constant social media battles, stressing that Fela’s legacy was not open to debate and warning that he would continue to challenge any attempts to drag his father’s name into fan wars.
