The European Commission is evaluating whether to classify Meta’s WhatsApp as a “very large platform” under the Digital Services Act, a commission spokesperson said on Friday.
If designated as a very large platform, WhatsApp would face additional regulatory requirements to address illegal and harmful content on its service.
The Digital Services Act imposes stricter content moderation obligations on platforms that receive this classification, requiring them to take more comprehensive measures against problematic online material.
