Ex-AGF Malami delays bail as DSS lays siege to prison over terrorism financing probe

Former Nigerian Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami has delayed processing his bail after the Department of State Services deployed over 50 operatives to Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja, sources told SaharaReporters.

The DSS arrived in approximately six Toyota Hilux vans and established a perimeter around the prison, monitoring all entries and exits following Malami’s Wednesday bail grant by the Federal High Court in his N8.7 billion money laundering case. “Malami has slowed down his bail processing as DSS operatives besiege Kuje Prison to arrest him for terrorism related charges upon being released on bail,” a top security source said. “The former attorney general has told his lawyers to step down his bail processing as over 50 DSS officers lay siege to the prison compound waiting to pounce on him.”

Malami faces 16 counts of money laundering alongside his son Abubakar Abdulaziz and fourth wife Hajia Bashir Asabe, though terrorism financing charges were notably absent from the EFCC’s formal charges. Justice Emeka Nwite granted bail to each defendant in the sum of N500 million with two sureties who must own property in highbrow Abuja districts.

Retired General Danjuma Ali-Keffi previously disclosed that investigations into Boko Haram financiers exposed a network allegedly involving senior officials, with documents linking some suspects to Malami, though Ali-Keffi clarified he was not directly accusing the former attorney general of terrorism financing. Malami remains in the prison’s VIP segregation cell, while his son continues receiving treatment at the facility’s clinic after reportedly falling ill upon arrival.
