The Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, have parted ways following Obi’s defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Speaking at a rally at the LP National Secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday, Baba-Ahmed reaffirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party and declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, describing leaders of the ADC as disgruntled elements. He said his ambition was not an attempt to replace Obi, but a long-held aspiration that predates the 2023 general election.
The rally was presided over by the LP’s factional chairman, Julius Abure, who maintained that the party remained intact under his leadership. Meanwhile, supporters of Obi in the Obedient Movement have said the former Anambra State governor would seek the ADC presidential ticket, with the group’s National Coordinator, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, insisting that Obi would not accept a vice-presidential role under any circumstances.
