Yemen’s Saudi-backed Presidential Leadership Council has expelled separatist leader Aidarous al-Zubaidi and referred him for prosecution on treason charges after he failed to travel to Riyadh for talks. Six council members accused the Southern Transitional Council leader of “undermining the independence of the republic,” according to a decree issued on Wednesday.
A Saudi-led coalition said Zubaidi “fled” Aden after missing the scheduled flight and allegedly moved heavily armed forces toward al-Dhale province. Coalition spokesman Maj-Gen Turki al-Malki said air strikes were launched to stop an escalation, adding that intelligence showed Zubaidi had mobilised armoured vehicles and weapons. Hospital sources told AFP that at least four civilians were killed.
The STC denied the accusations, insisting Zubaidi remains in Aden and describing the air strikes as “unjustified” and an “unfortunate escalation.” It also expressed concern over losing contact with its delegation in Riyadh. The developments have intensified tensions in southern Yemen, deepening divisions within the anti-Houthi alliance and straining relations between Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
