Court remands Bauchi Commissioner over terror financing allegations

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Bauchi State Commissioner for Finance, Yakubu Adamu, over alleged terrorism financing amounting to $9.7 million. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Adamu alongside Balarabe Abdullahi Ilelah, Aminu Mohammed Bose and Kabiru Yahaya Mohammed. Justice Emeka Nwite ordered their remand at the Kuje custodial facility pending further proceedings.

Following their plea of not guilty, EFCC counsel Samuel Chime sought a trial date to present witnesses and evidence. Defence counsel Gordy Uche, SAN, applied for bail, saying the application was filed on December 30 and served on the prosecution. He argued that Adamu’s detention had affected the payment of salaries to over 60,000 Bauchi State workers.

The EFCC opposed the bail request, stating it had filed a counter affidavit. The defendants face a 10-count charge under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, alongside separate allegations of N4.6 billion money laundering against Adamu. The case was adjourned to January 5 for hearing.
